Constituted 5 September 1918 as the 96th Division.
Organized 20 October 1918 at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina.
Inactivated 7 January 1919 at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina.
Activated 7 October 1921 with headquarters at Portland, Oregon.
Ordered into active military service 15 August 1942 and reorganized at Camp Adair, Oregon as the 96th Infantry Division.
Inactivated 3 February 1946 at Camp Anza, California.
Activated 31 December 1946 with headquarters at Helena, Montana.
