Constituted 23 July 1918 as the 98th Division.
Organized in October 1918 at Camp McClellan, Alabama.
Inactivated in November 1918 at Camp McClellan, Alabama.
Activated 18 August 1921 with headquarters at Syracuse, New York.
Ordered into active military service 15 September 1942 and reorganized at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky as the 98th Infantry Division.
Inactivated 16 February 1946 in Japan.
Activated 19 December 1946 with headquarters at Syracuse, New York.
