NotesThe M31 was an early attempt by the US military to develop a tank recovery vehicle. The vehicle was based on the chassis of the M3 medium tank. These were surplus models which had been replaced as a battle tank by the M4. As a part of the conversion they stripped the vehicle of all its main weapons except for the bow machine gun. The turret was reversed and had a dummy gun attached rear. Another dummy gun was welded on the old gun sponson which was now a door. It had a crane attached to the turret front, this along with booms and jacks could lift up to 27.000 kg.
