Notes | The Wesp (Wasp) was developed as a means to make a mobile mount for a light 105mm howitzer. The Russian front had shown the need for fully tracked vehicles and this was a way to turn an obsolete tank chassis into an armoured self-propelled gun. The chassis chosen was from the Panzer II light tank and modifications were made to extend the hull, move the engine forward and alter the hull front, other improvements included reducing the return rollers to three and addition of springs. The armament was the 105mm leFH18M which was derived from the standard light howitzer used by German field batteries. The Wesp was issued to armoured artillery batteries in armoured panzer and panzer grenadier divisions and served on all major fronts from mid-1943 to the end of the war. |
