NotesThe first tank to be developed as an armoured observation post was the Panzer III, these vehicles were beginning to lose their effectiveness as battle tanks, so 262 were converted to this role. The vehicles chosen were Mk. III Ausf E to H and these were equipped with communication and visual equipment. The main gun had been removed and replaced by a dummy barrel and the new mantlet was fitted with a single machine gun. These were in fact interim vehicles as plans were to be made to issue a specially designed armoured vehicle dedicated for that role. The Pz Beob Wg III was issued to armoured artillery batteries and served until the end of the war.
