Notes | In early 1942 a request was made to design a light field howitzer to replace the leFH 18 series. The leFH 18 was proving to be too heavy in manoeuvre in the field and they wanted a new design which would be easier to produce. The decided to mount the barrel of the leFH 18M to a PaK 40 carriage and add larger road wheels. This resulted in a light howitzer that could fire slightly faster than its predecessors. The leFH 18/40 never fully replaced the leFH 18M and both howitzers served until the end of the war. |
