NotesWhen the Chi-Ha first classed with Soviet armour, it was realised that the short 57mm gun was of little use when engaging enemy tanks from long range. In 1940 it was decided to re-arm the Chi-Ha with the new long barrelled 47mm Type 1 gun and this improved version was called the Shinhoto Chi-Ha. Even with the new gun it was still far behind the Russian T-34 and U.S. M4 Sherman. The vehicles first saw action in 1942 and went on to see extensive service on all fronts.
