Notes | In 1939 the Japanese were changing their ammunition over from 6.5mm to 7.7mm. The first weapons built using the new round, was the type 99 rifle and the type 99 light machine gun. The new machine gun had many similarities to type 96, but the main change would be the omission of the oiling mechanism and this resulted in a better all-round weapon. The type 99 never replaced the previous models, but served alongside the type 11 and 96 until 1945. |
