Notes | The type 03 heavy machine gun was a strip fed weapons which had certain similarities to the French Hotchkiss. Like other Japanese machine guns of this period, it came with an integral oiling mechanism which oiled each round as it entered the chamber. It fired a 6.5mm round which was found to be under powered for the task. The gun mount could be set for ground targets or fixed to engage aircraft and was issued to machine gun companies at battalion level. In action it could be easily carried by the crew using a set of metal poles which allowed two or three men to carry the weapon similar to a sedan chair. |
