Notes | With the appearance of the new breed of German heavy tanks, it was apparent that new Soviet tank had to be developed to keep the balance. With the resulting IS tanks still in the early stages of development, the Soviets decided on an interim vehicle to in fill the void caused by the introduction of the Panther and the KV was chose as a basis for this vehicle. They used a KV-1 chassis and added a new turret in which to house the large 85mm gun. The resulting vehicle was soon arriving at the front and saw action at the back end of 1943. The KV-85 was a good heavy tank which had heavy armour and a powerful gun, it was only built in small numbers and these were thrown into action during the Soviet offensives in 1944. |
