The Royal Yugoslav army began to form their first tank companies in 1936 and these were equipped with Renault light tanks which were supplied by France. Other units were equipped with Skoda designed T-32 tank destroyers. At the time of the German invasion the Yugoslav tank arm consisted of 55 R-35s and around 56 FT-17s and M.28s, plus eight Skoda T-32s.
