British Armoured divisions
The British Army started the war with only two armoured divisions. By 1942 they had raised another nine. Two of these never left Britain and were disbanded by 1944. Two more were disbanded in the field also in 1944. One of these divisions was never deployed as a whole formation, but broken up.
